Abstrak

The purpose of this study is to describe the history of elections in Indonesia from 1955 to 1971. The historical method used with a historical approach. Literature studies were conducted to Lind various sources. The results of the study show that after Indonesian independence, there was a plan for elections in 1946, which was then canceled and only began in 1955. The impact was the emergence of four major parties with different ideologies, followed by an economic, social, political, and security crisis, followed by a presidential decree. President Soekarno signed Supersemar and was replaced by Major General Soeharto. During this period, there was a plan for elections in 1968, but it was canceled. New elections began in 1971. The impact was the strengthening of Golkar as a political pillar, the simpliLication of political parties, and the dual function of the Indonesian Armed Forces (ABRI). These Lindings provide insight into how Indonesia has held elections twice after independence under different administrations, with the principle of free and fair elections, although there were still irregularities.
